I remember my 1st time seeing one of these linotype machine- it was at old printing company- the owner(i was ver new to printing and the book arts-thus being 20+ years ago) was nice enough to give me a tour of the print shop-which at the time did mostly short run job's now-stuff that your local copy machine store do. Anyway's I was blowen away - I mainly went there to get an estimate on reprinting a book. When I got the estimate back of $4000 I was floored, then I got the estimate from the bookbinder and there almost another $3,000 for 100 copies of a reprint. From that point on I vowed to learn all that I could about printing and binding- and here it is almost 20 years, and 4 printing presses later, as well as 5 Publication that I have hand pressed and bound- which I see in the 2nd hand market sell for $500-$700 a copy. Well I guess I did'nt do to bad.
But I still am in awe-when ever I see the Linotype Machine especially If I can find someone who has a working one or even know's how to use it. I had my shot a Lino, but my workshop was cramped already being a printing shop, silkscreen, and book binding- let alone all my 1/2 finished paintings. Nonetheless- the top Short- the make and website are posted- he has intentions to create a movie about Linotype and is asking for donations.
But I lieu of move-perhaps someone should get one of these beast's going and start selling
custom stationary.
